First meeting notes (by Paul Linney)

On March 24th, 1997 The MBMGCC held its inaugarual meedting at the Gentelmen Gene's Pub & Eatery in Mount Vernon, Washington. Groups of interested MG owners from the three basic regions attended this meeting:

1. Whidbey Island - headed by Herb Strasler
2. Mount Vernon, Sedro-Wooley, and Burlington arranged by Lyle Jacobson
3. Bellingham, Blaine, Ferndale, Stanwood, and La Conner arranged by Paul Linney

It was a bright and sunny day in spite fo a blustery wind and 22 cars, containing some forty interested, prospective members arrived at the venue with some fine examples of the Margue: Bill Orbech's 1949 MG TC, Ron Patterson's MG TD Mark II, and Lyle Jacobson's pristine 1958 MGA. There were also great array of MGBs along with several GTs and one Midget.

During the luncheon, Paul Linney, the organizer of the meeting, explained the basic objectives and aims of the proposed club and asked for suggestions and questions from the floor. The major response came from Steve Routt, past president of the MG Car Club Northwest Centre, who outlined the potential advantages of the group becoming a chapter/satellite of the MGCC NW Centre. He noted that the club was an established organization, had been formed in 1958, and currently has in excess of 450 members.

In fairness to the interested MG owners present, it was suggested that two alternatives be considered:

1. Become a Chapter/Satellite of the MGCC NW Centre
2. Pursue our own independent "Mount Baker MG Car Club" as a close-knit, independent, regional group catering to the specific needs and interests of our members residing in the Whatcom, Skagit and Island counties.

After considerable discussion, those present indicated by a show of hands that they were 18 to 12 in favor of forming an independent club.

Prospective member present were asked to volunteer their services to fill the various appropriate positions on a temporary basis until the club could be formed and a formal election held. Wayne Musselman proposed that Paul Linney act as president and he offered to serve as vice president. Mark Cook offered to serve as registrar/secretary and Lyle Jacobsen offered to serve as events coordinator.

We still need a treasurer and a newsletter editor and hope that someone from island county will volunteer for these positions. In the interim, Paul Linney will wear these hats along with other duties.

As this was an informal meeting, we did not try to develop any basic format for the club as this will evolve as the membership grows ant the needs and interests of the membership are made known and we develop more personal relationships.
